Choosing the Right Kitchen Cabinets: Materials, Styles, and What to Avoid
Kitchen cabinets account for 30-40% of a typical kitchen remodel budget and define the entire look and feel of the space. Choosing the right cabinets is one of the most important decisions you'll make during your renovation.
Cabinet Construction: What's Inside Matters
Before choosing a door style or finish, understand what the cabinet box is made of:
**Plywood box construction** is the gold standard. Plywood is strong, moisture-resistant, and holds screws securely over decades. We recommend plywood boxes for every kitchen.
**Particleboard construction** is cheaper but inferior. It swells when exposed to moisture, doesn't hold screws as well, and has a shorter lifespan. Many big-box store cabinets use particleboard — ask before you buy.
**MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)** falls between the two. It's acceptable for door panels but not ideal for box construction in kitchens where moisture is present.
Popular Door Styles
**Shaker:** Clean lines with a recessed center panel. The most popular style for modern and transitional kitchens. Works in virtually any home.
**Flat Panel (Slab):** Completely flat doors with no frame or panel detail. Ultra-modern and contemporary. Fingerprints show easily on glossy finishes.
**Raised Panel:** Traditional style with a decorative center panel that "raises" above the frame. Best for traditional and farmhouse kitchens.
**Glass Front:** Doors with glass inserts to display dishware or decorative items. Best used sparingly as accent pieces.
Wood Species Comparison
- **Maple:** Hard, durable, smooth grain. Takes paint beautifully. Our most recommended species for painted cabinets
- **Oak:** Strong and affordable. Prominent grain pattern adds character. Popular in natural/stained finishes
- **Cherry:** Rich, warm tones that deepen over time. Premium option for traditional kitchens
- **Birch:** Similar to maple but more affordable. Good budget option for painted or stained cabinets
- **Thermofoil:** Not wood — a vinyl wrap over MDF. Budget-friendly and easy to clean, but can peel over time near heat sources
Stock vs. Semi-Custom vs. Custom
**Stock cabinets** come in fixed sizes and limited styles. Available immediately. Lowest cost but least flexibility. Work well when your kitchen layout fits standard dimensions.
**Semi-custom cabinets** offer more size options, finish choices, and interior configurations. 4-8 week lead time. Best value for most kitchen remodels — the sweet spot between cost and customization.
**Custom cabinets** are built to your exact specifications with unlimited design options. 8-16 week lead time. Highest cost but the only option for unusual layouts or very specific design requirements.
Common Cabinet Mistakes to Avoid
- **Choosing style over substance:** A beautiful door on a particleboard box will fail within 10 years
- **Ignoring interior features:** Soft-close hinges, pull-out shelves, and lazy susans significantly improve daily function
- **Under-lighting the cabinets:** Under-cabinet lighting transforms both the look and usability of your kitchen
- **Forgetting crown molding:** Crown molding closes the gap between cabinet tops and ceiling, giving a built-in custom look
- **Not planning for appliance depths:** Ensure cabinet depths accommodate your refrigerator, dishwasher, and range
